Mistakes to Avoid When Planning Your Wedding

Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting projects you'll ever take on, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. With so many details to juggle, it’s easy to make a few missteps along the way. But don’t worry—I’m here to help you steer clear of the most common mistakes so you can focus on creating a wedding that’s as flawless as your love story.

1. Not Setting a Realistic Budget Early On

Why It’s a Problem: Many couples dive into planning before determining a clear budget, which often leads to overspending or financial stress.

How to Avoid It:

- Sit down with your fiancé and any contributing family members to outline a total budget.

- Allocate your budget based on priorities—splurge on what matters most to you (like your venue or photographer) and cut back on less critical areas.

- Remember hidden costs like tips, taxes, and alterations so there are no surprises later.

2. Booking a Venue Without a Guest Count

Why It’s a Problem: Your venue dictates the capacity and flow of your wedding. Booking without knowing how many people you’re inviting can lead to overcrowding or wasted space.

How to Avoid It:

- Draft a preliminary guest list before venue shopping.

- Choose a venue that comfortably accommodates your numbers while leaving a little wiggle room.

3. Waiting Too Long to Book Vendors

Why It’s a Problem: Popular photographers, planners, and other vendors can book out a year (or more) in advance, leaving you with limited options if you wait too long.

How to Avoid It:

- As soon as you pick your date and venue, prioritize booking your top vendors.

- Focus on those with limited availability, like photographers and planners, early in the process.

4. Skipping a Wedding Day Timeline

Why It’s a Problem: A chaotic, unorganized day can leave you feeling stressed and rushed, and important moments may be missed.

How to Avoid It:

- Work with your planner or photographer to create a detailed timeline for your day.

- Factor in extra time for hair and makeup, travel, and unforeseen delays.

5. Underestimating the Importance of Communication

Why It’s a Problem: Misunderstandings with vendors, wedding party members, or family can lead to unnecessary stress.

How to Avoid It:

- Confirm all agreements with vendors in writing, including pricing, services, and timelines.

- Clearly communicate expectations with your bridal party and family to avoid last-minute surprises.

6. Ignoring Weather Backup Plans

Why It’s a Problem: If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, ignoring the possibility of bad weather could leave you scrambling for solutions on your big day.

How to Avoid It:

- Have a backup plan (like a tent or indoor option) in place for outdoor ceremonies and receptions.

- Check with your vendors to ensure they can accommodate weather changes.

7. Trying to DIY Everything

Why It’s a Problem: While DIY projects can save money, they also take time, energy, and resources that you might not have during the final weeks before your wedding.

How to Avoid It:

- Be realistic about what you can handle.

- Choose a few meaningful DIY projects and leave the rest to professionals or trusted helpers.

8. Overcomplicating the Guest List

Why It’s a Problem: A long guest list can put pressure on your budget and may lead to awkward situations if you feel obligated to invite people you’re not close to.

How to Avoid It:

- Stick to the people who matter most to you and your partner.

- Don’t feel pressured to invite every coworker, distant relative, or childhood friend.

9. Forgetting About Vendor Tips

Why It’s a Problem: Not factoring in gratuities for your vendors can cause last-minute budget headaches.

How to Avoid It:

- Include tips in your overall budget from the beginning.

- Check with your venue or planner to see if gratuities are already included in your contracts.

10. Neglecting Yourself and Your Partner

Why It’s a Problem: Weddings are a celebration of your relationship, but focusing solely on logistics can lead to burnout and stress.

How to Avoid It:

- Schedule regular date nights where wedding talk is off-limits.

- Remember to check in with each other emotionally throughout the planning process.

11. Not Doing a Final Run-Through

Why It’s a Problem: Small details can fall through the cracks if you don’t do a final walkthrough or checklist before the big day.

How to Avoid It:

- Host a rehearsal the day before to ensure everyone knows their roles.

- Check with all vendors the week of your wedding to confirm details.

12. Forgetting to Have Fun!

Why It’s a Problem: Overthinking every tiny detail can take the joy out of planning one of the happiest days of your life.

How to Avoid It:

- Trust your vendors and helpers to take care of the details.

- Focus on the big picture—this day is about celebrating love and commitment.

i’ve seen so many brides (and grooms) have big visions and see them fail before coming to life. It’s not because they aren’t organized, they aren’t trying, they don’t have a big enough budget ect... It’s because planning an event with 20 or 50 100+ people is not something that most people have ever done! The most important thing to remember, is that it’s not going to go 100% perfect. The timeline will change slightly, the bustle will take a second to put up, the family photos will take a few minutes longer because kids are crying or someone wandered off, and THATS OKAY!

Planning your wedding is just as much about the journey as it is about the destination, so take a deep breath and don’t lose sight of what truly matters: marrying the love of your life.
